Here is a great picture of some guys doing basket weaving at Kern.  It’s great to see that classic crafts never go out of style!  We’re pretty sure we’re still using the same table for Arts and Crafts…or at least one that looks just like it.

You can check out this picture and many more at Camp Kern’s online photo site by clicking here.

Yes, you heard that right, Camp Kern’s brand-new (to us) trolley has officially arrived!  In this post are some pictures (more to come soon) and a short video of the trolley being unloaded from the flatbed truck that drove it to 5291 State Rt. 350 from Washington state! (more…)

Hey everyone!  We are working with 10 other YMCA camps to try to win a grant from Pepsi through their Refresh Everything campaign.  This is a chance for us to not only get money for a great program, but to really Supersize some activities here at Kern!

Here’s what we need you to do:

First, go to http://www.refresheverything.com/bigfun

Second, vote for the YMCA Big Fun campaign.

Third, tell your friends and family to vote as well.

Fourth, vote every day during the month of April! We need lots and lots of votes to win this thing, but it’ll be worth it.

Make sure you check out the Big Fun Facebook page for more info!

First, it’s been a while since we updated our blog.  We’ve had the MACC conference here at camp, where over 160 YMCA camping professionals gather at Camp Kern to talk and learn about the challenges, future, and needs of the YMCA camping community.  It was great to have all of them join us, we got to show off this wonderful facility, and everyone left with many great memories of Kern.

After MACC, we are now very focused on two things:

1.  Talking with camper families and potential camper families.  We’ve had tons of calls, emails, letters, and requests for information!  With the 100th coming up, people are really excited for this summer, and we want to make sure everyone has all the info they need to make a decision about camp.

2.  We are in the process of hiring another wonderful crop of summer counselors!  If you know a college-aged person who would be a great counselor (they need to be energetic, kid-focused, and a great role model) send them to our website, and make sure they send in an application.  It’s a tough job market out there, and we’re hiring only the best!

We’re hitting the road!

If you’re in the Cincinnati area over the next few weeks, make sure you come see us!  We’ll be at:

  • The Tri-County Mall on Saturday, March 6th, from 10:00am to 4:00pm.  It’s the Summer Adventures for all Kids fair, it’s going to be a blast, and I hear that there’s a new kids play area at the mall as well!

If you’re in the Dayton area, we’ll be at:

  • Wright State University for the Miami Valley Camp Fair on Saturday, March 13 from 11:00am to 2:00pm.  Come hang out with us, they’ve got a great climbing wall right next to where we’ll be set up, and there’s always great snacks and prizes!
  • The Springboro “That Spring Thing”.  Not exactly sure what we’ll be doing there, as this is a new one for us, but it should be fun!
  • Also, don’t forget about our Open Houses!  April 18 and May 16 from 1-5pm.  They’re going to be a great time!

We’re looking for other places/businesses to visit this spring!  If you think your business (or your parents) would be interested in having us come by, talk with people, and show off Kern, call Mike Costlow at 513-932-3756 x.1530 or email at mcostlow@daytonymca.org, and we’ll set something up!

Here at Camp Kern we’ve been running our Ultimate Survivor and Teen Ultimate Survivor programs for 7 years.  Every week, we make a new video for the kids and families to show them what happened during the week, and to give the program a real “television” feel.  It’s one of our most popular programs, consistently sold out, and constantly updated with fresh challenges.  This year is going to be another fantastic one, full of adventure and fun!  Check out the video for a small (very small) taste of what the program is like.

PS- If you have ever been in survivor, seen the TV show, or played outside, send us ideas for new challenges!  They need to be adapted to camp, but we’re always on the lookout for great ideas!

Here’s a new 30 second commercial for Camp Kern!

We’re putting a few of these together from video this summer, and wanted to let you be some of the first to see it!  This clip features some of our counselors playing the part of the Peddlers, selling magical items and generally making things difficult for our campers.  Ah, the things you learn at Kern!

This month’s Virtual Campfire features two of Camp Kern’s finest singing their rendition of a camp classic.  You may know the Moose song, and you may notice that this song is certainly not about a moose.  It’s about a mouse and his house and his eating habits.
